The perfect messy place is on top of the crafting table cloth. Just pick of a flannel back, vinyl top one at the store for a couple of bucks. You will use it for everything. Give the kids the pumpkins put down the plates and squirt their favorite colors onto the plates. Hand over the brushes and hope that more paint gets on the pumpkins than the kids! They will have a ball and display them proudly on your front steps. Enjoy this craft, it is easy and fun. You could even go as far as planting a mum inside of the painted pumpkin if you wish to.
